October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The purpose of this designation is to raise awareness about the importance of individuals with disabilities having the opportunity to participate in the labor force and have the opportunity for gainful employment. This includes the arena of small business too.  A considerable portion of the disability population are small business owners.

Disability Designs Etc., owned by Christinne Gray, a person with cerebral palsy, is an example of disabled entrepreneurship. Disability Designs Etc., was created with the premise that t-shirts are a great way to express yourself and can be a great conversation starter. The conversations that can be initiated because of the designs that are available to choose from at the online store can help others get an inside look into what issues matter to that individual and their community. It can also help someone gain a better understanding of what life is like when you live with a disability.

The business’s slogan is “raising disability awareness one t-shirt at a time”.  The different merchandise available serves many purposes. First, it is a great way for people to let their voices be heard. Second, it provides an opportunity for those outside of the disability community to help support the issues that are important to them and the people they love. Whether you have friends or family that live with a disability, chances are disability impacts your world in some way, shape or form.

Our goal is to engage people both in and out of the disability community to consider various issues faced in society by persons with disabilities.  The hope is that these products can be an avenue for dialogue to be initiated so that questions some people may have can be answered and we can all have the chance to have a better understanding of how things affect one another in our society.

Each design reinforces the concept of incorporating important slogans about different issues faced by the disability community to help raise awareness on issues that are important to us.   The founder creates original designs to promote inclusion, diversity, acceptance and empowerment of persons with disabilities. There are different designs available that range in topics such as holidays, adaptive sports, and disability history.  The designs celebrate the richness and diversity of the disability community and all it has to offer. This message can sometimes be overlooked when thinking about the disability community but should not be the case at all. This community has made many contributions to society that should be recognized. This is just an effort to help others understand the importance of the community to have the chance to continue their priceless contributions.

A range of products with various disability-themed designs are currently available and more are being added regularly.  Some of the items available items for purchase at our online store include t-shirts, hoodies, long sleeve shirts, and tote bags.
