Katherine Magnoli Biography
Katherine’s passion for writing is lifelong. What started out simply as a hobby, evolved into an avenue for her to express her emotions as she faced bullying and ostracization as a person with a disability living in a small town that had little to no diversity.
At the age of twenty-two, she experienced kidney failure. Soon after, she met someone at the dialysis center who suggested that she channel her frustrations by connecting with children who also faced struggles. He introduced her to a school for children on the autism spectrum and who had other learning disabilities. She found inspiration in meeting these kids and becoming privy to how they navigated life’s ups and downs, including episodes of bullying. She also gained deeper insights into how the “able bodied” or “non-disabled” community views those living with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities.
The ultimate triggering event that led to the book series was an encounter she had at a swimming pool when she was twenty-four years old. A little boy told her he felt sorry for her because she wasn’t able to swim like him. At first, this upset her. Then, she realized that she could become a voice for educating children about how people with disabilities want to be treated. Since writing was a natural outlet for her, she dreamed up a book about a superhero in a wheelchair who helps kids who are being bullied and who teaches her peers what inclusion and mutual respect looks like.
In 2024, Katherine partnered with Brick by Brick Production and Disability Rights Florida on two advocacy videos, one focused on the importance of voting by mail for the disability community and the other featuring a tutorial on how to be an effective self-advocate.
Most recently, Katherine was hired by Happy Sped Tutoring as their Resource Advocate.
In future months, Katherine will be participating in local events at the Walk-A-Mile Expo, Adventure Day, along with being a panelist for the ReelAbilities Film Festival held in Coral Gables.
Lastly, Katherine has recently been in discussion with people from Paramount and Warner Brothers about the possibility of an animated series.
